The reality
A large crypto position is not, by itself, a residency application. The Panama Qualified Investor Visa is built around a qualifying investment in titled real estate, listed securities, or a fixed-term bank deposit. Realized crypto gains can fund that investment the same way proceeds from a business sale or a conventional portfolio can.
Source-of-funds documentation applies to crypto gains the same way it applies to any other lawful income source. Panama asks you to show where the capital came from: employment income, business profits, investment returns, inheritance, or asset sales. There is no separate crypto rule set on this site. The requirements are the ones already listed under eligibility.
What changes for this audience is the starting point of the capital, not the visa itself. You still complete one of the three investment routes, file the same application, and receive the same permanent residency. The current real estate minimum is $300,000; this is scheduled to increase to $500,000 on October 15, 2026.
Panama's territorial tax system is the structural reason crypto investors look here. Income earned inside Panama can be taxed there. Foreign-sourced income is not. You still file where you are a tax resident, but Panama does not add a second layer on gains realized outside the country.
Why Panama works for crypto investors
Crypto-Derived Capital
Realized crypto gains can fund the qualifying investment the same way other lawful investment returns or asset sales can. There is no separate crypto category.
Same Source-of-Funds Standard
Documentation requirements are the ones on the eligibility page: employment income, business profits, investment returns, inheritance, or asset sales. Crypto is not carved out.
Territorial Taxation
Panama taxes income earned inside Panama. Foreign-sourced income, including gains realized outside the country, is not taxed by Panama.
Dollar-Denominated
Panama uses the US dollar as its official currency. No conversion fees, no currency risk, no surprises on your bank statements.
Three Investment Routes
Titled real estate, listed securities from $500,000, or a $750,000 fixed-term bank deposit. The current real estate minimum is $300,000; this is scheduled to increase to $500,000 on October 15, 2026. The same routes available to every other applicant.
No Language Test
There is no Spanish exam, no cultural integration requirement, and no interview. The investment and standard documentation are the primary filters.
How the visa works
The Qualified Investor Visa has three paths: real estate, listed securities from $500,000, or a $750,000 fixed-term deposit. The current real estate minimum is $300,000; this is scheduled to increase to $500,000 on October 15, 2026. See the full breakdown of all three routes.
Processing is 30 to 90 days from document submission to provisional permit. See the process.
Common questions
Yes, in the same way you would use other lawful investment returns or proceeds from an asset sale. You still need to demonstrate the source of your investment capital. See the eligibility page for the documentation Panama actually requires. This page does not add crypto-specific rules on top of that.
The qualifying investment is titled real estate, listed securities, or a bank deposit, so the capital has to be available to complete that purchase. How you move realized crypto into that form is a banking and tax question for your own advisors, not a separate visa category.
Panama generally uses a territorial tax system. Income earned within Panama is generally taxed there. Foreign-sourced crypto gains generally are not. Confirm how this applies to your situation with a qualified tax professional. Your tax position in the country where you are a tax resident does not change because you hold Panamanian residency.
Yes. Residency is not a requirement to sit in-country while you manage wallets, exchanges, or a remote trading setup.
Once realized crypto is placed into a qualifying asset, the hold and return rules apply to that asset, not to the original tokens. A bank deposit is returned after the five-year term. Real estate can be sold after the required holding period. Securities remain in your brokerage. None of this is a government fee. The $300,000 real estate investment minimum is scheduled to rise to $500,000 on October 15, 2026.
